Quality Assurance

Colombia's Quality Assurance System for Higher Education, defined by Decree 1330 of July 25, 2019 and updated by Decree 529 of 2024, is the set of institutions, bodies, policies and processes through which national regulation guarantees the quality of institutions and their programs. In line with that framework and with the guidelines of the National Accreditation Council —CNA—, ÚNICA continuously promotes self-assessment, self-regulation and ongoing improvement across its teaching, academic, faculty, research, cultural and outreach functions, guided by principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and sustainability.

Objectives of the institutional quality policy

Strengthen institutional planning processes and action plans that reinforce the effective management of institutional work.
Strengthen the qualified registration processes involved in creating new academic programs and in self-assessment for renewal.
Reinforce the processes leading to high-quality accreditation, including the renewal of program accreditation and institutional accreditation, in line with current guidelines.
Develop strategies to ensure the control, monitoring and analysis of the reports submitted to the MEN information systems (SACES, SNIES, OLE, SPADIES).
Ensure the alignment of processes, organization and roles for the fulfilment of teaching, academic, faculty and scientific duties, strengthening the structure and the relationships between organizational levels in coherence with the IEP.
Develop tools that allow the institution to review not only regulatory compliance but also its mission mandate, becoming an institution committed to quality, innovation, relevance and social responsibility.

Under the regulatory framework above, and in accordance with Acuerdo 01 de 2019 issued by the Sala General —our institution's highest governing body—, ÚNICA's quality policy reads as follows (translated from the binding Spanish text):

«ÚNICA understands quality as the fulfilment of its mission and vision through an academic offering that is relevant to the country and specialized in Bilingual Education, grounded in a solid combination of teaching, research and outreach. The Quality Assurance Policy is structured as a continuous, ongoing process that lets us establish improvement actions contributing to the strengthening of our programs and of the institution, so as to keep ÚNICA an innovative, sustainable, socially responsible institution and an undisputed leader in the sector».

This policy is our roadmap for qualified registration and program accreditation processes.

Principles of the Institutional Quality Assurance Policy

Coherence The institution takes the necessary steps for its development plan, action plans, policies, processes and procedures — both academic and institutional — to align with its nature, mission, vision and the purposes set out in the IEP.
Self-assessment An internal process of reflection that identifies strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement. At ÚNICA it is understood as a management and quality assurance tool for fulfilling the institutional mission.
Transparency A reflective process carried out by the academic community that identifies, honestly and objectively, the areas open to improvement.
Self-regulation The implementation of concrete changes which, arising from self-assessment, become the instruments of adjustment and improvement a program generates to reach high levels of quality.
Participation The involvement of the academic community in quality assurance processes.
Disclosure and accountability The university community is kept informed both of the self-assessment exercises to be carried out and of the results obtained, so that it can enrich them and use them in building improvement plans.
Sustainability The institution directs its administrative and academic management towards fulfilling the institutional mission and vision.
Technical and financial viability The competent collegiate bodies give priority to allocating resources for carrying out improvement plans. Plans, programs and projects developed under quality assurance must be financially and technically viable.
